The Tanzania Network of Community Health Funds (TNCHF) has advised Tanzanians to shift to the use of health insurance in order to do away with corruption elements in provision of health services.
The statement was made by the TNCHF Social Health Insurance Coordinator, Tawa Meramba on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam in a farewell party of the component leader of Tanzania-Germany Programme to Support Health (TGPSH) Meinolf Kuper who supports the fund financially.
He explained that health insurance is very cheap as it covers a big number of family members, adding that the use of health insurance cards would reduce corruption as no hard cash is required hence no cash negotiations needed for any treatment.
Meramba said that one of the factors holding back many people to get health insurances is the lack of medicines in health centers.
According to the TNHCF Coordinator from January to June 2012 in Mbeya region, a total of 21,458 families joined the Community Health Fund (CHF) after being educated on the importance of the programme.
Meanwhile, Meinolf Kuper from TGPSH’s said the ministry of health’s work is not providing health services, rather to make policies and monitoring the sector, adding that the task of health provision is mostly done by NGOs.
He called upon the NGOs providing health services to reach many poor people in the villages so that they as well benefit just like people living in better environment.
TNCHF is an NGO introduced in 2003 and it has targeted rural dwellers and managed to operate in four regions which are Mbeya, Lindi, Tanga and Mtwara.
