The party’s secretary general, Dr Wilbrod Slaa, told this paper over the phone that the official was arrested when the party’s top officials were in a routine meeting discussing party issues.
He could not give reasons for the arrest, saying he himself was caught unawares.
“We were in a routine meeting discussing party matters when a police officer came and asked to see our party’s director of defence and security, Wilfred Lwakatare,” Dr Slaa narrated.
He said before the police arrested Lwakatare, they asked the receptionist to call the party cadre, but told he was that he was in a meeting with other officials.
“Having lost patience, the police officer stormed into the meeting and seized Lwakatare and went with him to the police station,” he said.
“At first it seemed a minor thing as we shared jokes with the police only to be told later that Lwakatare was escorted by the police to the police station without even telling us the reasons for the arrest,” he noted.
During the escort, Lwakatare was with his lawyer, Nyaronyo Kicheere to represent him, he said.
When contacted over the phone for comment, Ilala Regional Crime Officer Duwan Nyanda could not give details on the arrest, claiming that it was not within his jurisdiction to talk on the matter.
He told this reporter to contact “the high ranking officials.”
